MMA promotions are scrambling to find solutions on how to put on events during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Brazil’s Federal Fight came up with an unusual one: Drive-in MMA.
A 470-car drive-in place was set up earlier this year to hold concerts and other events while gatherings are still prohibited due to the health crisis, and fight fans were able to attend a MMA event in a safer manner Saturday night.
Federal Fight 2 was headlined by former UFC heavyweight Guto Inocente, who scored a one-punch knockout over Flavio Magon to capture the vacant heavyweight belt. The event was streamed live on YouTube and showed on three big screens near the parking area.
According to the promotion, all fighters competing on the card were tested for coronavirus, as well as the production team, and all tests came back negative. Since fans parked their cars in areas surrounded by railings and weren’t allowed to leave that spot, they weren’t required COVID-19 testing.
Fresh off the knockout win, Inocente (8-5) already has his next fight lined up. Inocente is set to battle former Bellator and WSOF fighter D.J. Linderman at Taura MMA 11, which takes place in Kissimmee, Fla., on Oct. 30.
