During the UFC Rio press conference prior to the ceremonial weigh-ins, Alex Pereira (13-3) was asked about several things ranging from his prospective injury to his next opponent options. “Poatan” explained that he did break his foot when facing Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 320. While Pereira prevailed by stoppage in 80 seconds, the timetable for his return is still uncertain.

“I did an X-Ray in Las Vegas and an MRI here and we have a fracture on my foot,” Pereira said, transcription via MMA Fighting. “But I still don’t know what will happen, or how long it will take for me to recover.”
“Poatan” continued, specifying the exact card in which he would like to return if able.
“I think it’s good to focus on this White House [event], it’s something that interests me. I think I’ll focus on this,” he explained.
Who’s Next?
The two-time light heavyweight champion has a number of options at his disposal. He currently sits at 1-1 with former beltholder Ankalaev, with a rubber match a possibility down the line. Numerous contenders like Carlos Ulberg and Jiri Prochazka—the latter already suffering two stoppage losses to “Poatan”—are lining up to challenge for the throne.
With a titanic 6-foot-4 frame and a rumored walking weight north of 220 pounds, it would not take a great deal of bulking for the Brazilian to switch gears to try to become the first fighter in UFC history to win championships in three different weight classes. Ex-light heavyweight Jon Jones made the switch up to the largest men’s category, easily dispatching Ciryl Gane for the vacant throne, and Jones’ name has been floated as an option as well as current titleholder Tom Aspinall.
Pereira freely admitted he had no idea who would be next for him, and that he is primarily focused on recovery first. His only plan is to be ready to compete in 2026 for the oft-discussed UFC White House event, which has a rumored date of June 14 but nothing set in stone by the organization. A return to action before then is not likely, per the 38-year-old.
