Tom Aspinall put his heavyweight title on the line against Ciryl Gane in the main event at UFC 321 last Saturday. The fight abruptly ended in a no contest after a double eye poke from Gane late in the first round left Aspinall unable to continue. While Aspinall was the heavy favorite, Volkov, like many others, saw Gane getting the better of the champ as long as the fight lasted. “Drago” fancies his chances of becoming a champion after watching the UFC 321 headliner, as he believes that he beat Gane in the last fight.
‘My Chances Have Gotten Better Now’
“My chances have gotten better now, so we will see,” Volkov told Red Corner MMA. “I’ve watched the fight a bit. But Gane won the first round, from what I’ve seen. And lost to me.”
Volkov dropped a unanimous decision against Gane in their first meeting in 2021. “Bon Gamin” also won the rematch against Volkov last year, but it was via a highly controversial split decision. Almost every media outlet scored the fight in favor of Volkov, who also edged past on the Verdict scorecard, a public voting forum. Meanwhile, Volkov picked up a controversial split-decision win over Jailton Almeida at UFC 321. While Almedia controlled Volkov on the ground for nearly 11 minutes, the Russian landed whatever damage he could. UFC CEO Dana White strongly supported the scorecards for the fight.
