Amanda Nunes and Felicia Spencer are supposed to meet at UFC 250 in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 9, but the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has almost every fighter on the roster wondering if they will still be competing as scheduled.
With travel bans and government issued lockdowns being issued around the globe, the upcoming pay-per-view card in Brazil seems far from a certainty. That’s why Spencer pitched the idea to keep the title fight intact but move the card to Florida instead.
“Amanda Nunes, we both live in Florida. Let’s get UFC 250 to our backyard,” Spencer wrote on Twitter. “Please don’t leave!”
Nunes, who trains at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla., was quick to respond as she hopes to hold onto her next title defense as she puts her 145-pound title on the line for the first time.
“Sorry, just seeing this. I’m not going anywhere, girl,” Nunes said back to Spencer. “I think that’s a great idea. Let’s do this.”

While the creative matchmaking from Nunes and Spencer might get disregarded in past situations, the coronavirus pandemic has forced everyone to rethink future plans, especially when it comes to sporting events and mass gatherings.
Florida was one of the only locations that didn’t issue a statewide lockdown once the coronavirus pandemic started sweeping across the U.S.
It wasn’t until this week that Governor Ron DeSantis issued an order as of April 2 that only essential activities and services were allowed. He previously issued an executive “safer-at-home” order for Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties through the middle of May.
Previously, Florida was one of the only states that hadn’t shut down all non-essential activities, which is what allowed regional mixed martial arts promotion Combat Night to hold an event in Jacksonville on March 21 behind closed doors.
On top of that, many athletes who are scheduled to compete at UFC 250 have raised concerns about the event moving forward, especially with gyms shut down all over the world, which has prevented most fighters from normal training routines.
