Conor McGregor’s absence from the Octagon continues to frustrate fans and fellow fighters alike and is compounded by the Irishman’s repeated suggestions that he wants to fight. UFC welterweight Ben Askren is one fighter who clearly shares that frustration.
The 31-year-old McGregor hasn’t fought since UFC 229 last October when he was submitted in the fourth round in his 155-pound title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov. His last win was when he won the lightweight championship himself, against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 back in 2016. Despite his absence, he is officially ranked as the No. 3 lightweight on the UFC roster.
In a recent appearance on ESPN’s “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show,” Askren said enough is enough with McGregor’s trash talk and the time has come to follow through on his constant teasing of a return.
“I get to have an opinion. I like MMA, if I want to have an opinion, I get to have an opinion, and my opinion is, a Dustin Poirier fight is a good option for Conor, Conor should shut up, stop trying to act too good for it – take the fight, take a fight, take any fight, we don’t care,” Askren said.
“We just want to hear you shut up on social media and actually take a fight. I mean, give me a damn break. It’s been a year? More than a year? Before that, another year. It’s like, come on man. Get in there and shut up. No more Tweets, lets fight already. Conor can Tweet. He just can’t Tweet about fighting anyone without fighting, or saying he’s too good for fighting anyone without hopping in there. So he can Tweet about whatever he wants. Just not about saying, ‘I’m tough I’m gonna fight,’ unless you actually fight.”
Askren last competed against Jorge Masvidal back in July where he was knocked out by a flying knee in a UFC-record five seconds. The former One Championship and Bellator MMA welterweight champion will look to rebound from the loss against Brazilian grappling ace Demian Maia on Oct. 26 with the fight set to headline UFC Singapore.
