Belal Muhammad Promotes ‘Dagestan 2-3 Years and Forget’ Program

If Belal Muhammad had to start MMA all over again, he would “go Dagestan two to three years and forget.”

The famous term was first used by Muhammad’s close friend and occasional training partner, Islam Makhachev. Makhachev advised his friend and teammate, Daniel Cormier, to send his kids to Dagestan for a few years to teach them elite wrestling.

During a recent Q&A session on social media, Muhammad was asked what he would do differently if he had to start MMA all over again. The former welterweight champ said he would have chosen Makhachev’s “Dagestan two to three years and forget” program. Muhammad further suggested that anyone starting MMA should focus on wrestling, which he considers the best skillset in the sport.

Muhammad: Wrestling is the King of MMA Disciplines

“If I had to start MMA all over again, I would go two to three years Dagestan, forget… A lot of people always tell me, ‘I’m starting MMA late, if I’m doing it, starting now what would I do? What would I put my kids in?’ It’s definitely wrestling,” Muhammad said on social media. “Wrestling is the king of the sport, it’s hardest thing. It builds discipline, it builds structure and it builds your strength. You’re using your body, you’re going one on one, there’s nobody to blame but yourself. So for these young kids out there: Parents, put them in wrestling.”

An elite grappler himself, Muhammad was unbeaten in 11 straight outings, including a welterweight title win over Leon Edwards last year. While Muhammad was a heavy favorite going into his first title defense against Jack Della Maddalena, the Australian displayed spectacular anti-wrestling to earn an upset win. While Makhachev had long been contemplating a welterweight move, he didn’t want to fight Muhammad for the title. As soon as Muhammad was dethroned, Makhachev vacated his lightweight title to move up and now awaits a welterweight title shot against Maddalena.
