Brendan Schaub Details Pressure on Tom Aspinall Ahead of UFC 321

Brendan Schaub believes Tom Aspinall has a lot to prove at UFC 321

Aspinall puts his heavyweight title on the line against Ciryl Gane in the main event at UFC 321 on Saturday at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. While he was the interim champ, Aspinall chased a matchup against Jon Jones for over a year. Aspinall was promoted to undisputed champ earlier this year after Jones retired without fighting him.

Jones had won the vacant title against Gane in 2023, which marked his return to action after a three-year hiatus. “Bones” took hardly over two minutes to submit the Frenchman with a guillotine. Since Aspinall repeatedly accused Jones of ducking, Schaub believes the Englishman has to beat Gane more convincingly than Jones.

‘You Have to Beat Him in Under Two Minutes’

“Of course, you’re gonna win, but you have to do it more impressively than Jon Jones did, because this is the only opponent you both have in common,” Schaub said on YouTube. “Jon choked him out in two minutes. Imagine the pressure: Tom not only has to beat Ciryl Gane, who is an absolute f—-ing French nightmare. He has to do it more convincingly than Jon Jones. He has to do it faster and more impressive. So whether it’s a knockout right away or he takes him to the mat right away, you have to beat him in under two minutes. Unfortunately that’s what Tom’s dealing with.”

Gane has rebounded with wins over Serghei Spivac and Alexander Volkov since his loss to Jones. Meanwhile, Aspinall won the interim heavyweight title against Sergei Pavlovich and defended it against Curtis Blaydes, avenging his lone UFC loss which came via a knee injury.
