Brendan Allen: Reinier de Ridder’s Corner Had Little Role in Throwing in the Towel

Brendan Allen believes Reinier de Ridder didn’t want to continue fighting at UFC Vancouver

While de Ridder was originally scheduled to fight Anthony Hernandez in the main event at UFC Vancouver, Allen stepped in on short notice after “Fluffy” was forced out with an injury. While de Ridder roped in the first round, Allen started imposing his will as the fight went on. De Ridder’s corner threw in the towel after the fourth round in an upset loss, as “The Dutch Knight” was barely able to get up from his stool.

While some fans have criticized de Ridder’s corner for throwing in the towel, Allen disagrees. Allen believes de Ridder’s corner had little agency in stopping the fight. According to Allen, de Ridder’s corner followed protocol by asking him the right questions and throwing in the towel based on his answers.

’He Was Done’

“My first reaction was surprise, to be honest,” Allen told Home of Fight. “Just because I never pictured someone to quit on the stool… I don’t think that has anything to do with his corner. He quit. They asked him questions, he was messed up. Basically he didn’t want to continue. And they threw the towel. As a proper corner that’s what you should do. They asked him the questions, he answered the questions. Based on his answers, he was done.”

De Ridder’s longtime coach and friend, Harun Ozkan, took complete responsibility for stopping the fight. De Ridder was unbeaten in four UFC outings with three finishes before losing to Allen. Meanwhile, “All In” is on a two-fight winning streak and 2-2 in his last four, with both losses coming against top-tier competition.
