Charles Oliveira made Demian Maia cry after his win at UFC Rio.
Oliveira was an underdog going into his headliner against Mateusz Gamrot at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. “Do Bronxs” established his superiority on the ground early and submitted Gamrot in the second round in front of an ecstatic home crowd.

Oliveira then expressed his gratitude towards Ultimate Fighting Championship grappling legend Maia, who was a part of the Portuguese commentary team. Oliveira credited Maia for developing his ground game, making the former title challenger tear up.
“Demian has always been my biggest Jiu jitsu model,” Oliveira said. “He helped me a lot in this camp and made important adjustments in my game. When I got the back, I felt totally comfortable because I did that during the whole camp.”
Oliveira then thanked his father in an exclusive interview with Evelyn Rodrigues backstage. Oliveira revealed that his father would often forgo important expenses to pay for his fees to enter jiu-jitsu tournaments. Oliveira plans to celebrate his win with a big party in a favela (slum) for the children of Guaruja.
“I owe everything to this man here. When I started to train Jiu Jitsu, sometimes he sacrificed important expenses to pay for championship registration. I’m really grateful to my dad. Tomorrow is Children Day. I want to celebrate by having a big party for the children of the favela in Guaruja”
Oliveira rebounded from a title loss against Ilia Topuria with his win over Gamrot. The former lightweight champ now wants a matchup against BMF king Max Holloway.
