Aswell (11-3) made his sophomore Ultimate Fighting Championship appearance in a featherweight matchup against Lucas Almeida (15-5) at UFC Rio on Saturday. “The Texas Kid” took less than two minutes to knock out Almeida, who allegedly fought with a broken right hand. Aswell subsequently revealed that his 4OZ. Fight Club teammate Van will fight Alexandre Pantoja (30-5) for the flyweight title at UFC 323 on Dec. 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After coming out unscathed, Aswell is rallying to fight on the same card in December.
“I just saw it got announced, Las Vegas, Dec. 6,” Aswell said in his post-fight Octagon interview. “My best friend Joshua Van is fighting. I would love to be on his card. He is fighting Pantoja for the championship. If we could get on that card, I would love it. I’m healthy, I’m ready, let’s go.”
Aswell dropped a split decision against Bodgan Grad in his Dana White’s Contender Series opportunity last year. However, Aswell got a second chance this past May, when he made his UFC debut on three days’ notice against Bolaji Oki and suffered a decision loss.
Meanwhile, Van (15-2) is on a five-fight win streak that has seen him leave behind the likes of Edgar Chairez, Rei Tsuruya, and Brandon Royval. “The Fearless” has only lost to Charles Johnson in the UFC. Pantoja in unbeaten in eight straight outings since 2020. “The Cannibal” won the flyweight title against Brandon Moreno in 2023 and has since defended it four times.
