Charles Oliveira Reacts to Championship Defeat at UFC 317

Charles Oliveira brought the fight to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317, but he ultimately paid the price for his aggression.

With the vacant lightweight title on the line, the Brazilian suffered a first-round knockout loss to Topuria in Saturday’s main even at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The defeat dashed Oliveira’s hopes of a second championship reign at 155 pounds.

“It wasn’t how we wanted it but I’m fine,” Oliveira wrote on Instagram. “I just want to thank everyone for the affection and the wonderful energy. God bless you all.”

Oliveira ‘Fine’ After Disappointing Loss

Oliveira, who is the UFC’s all-time leader in finishes and submissions, enjoyed a brief title reign in 2021. He claimed the belt with a second-round stoppage of Michael Chandler at UFC 262 and then defended the crown by submitting Dustin Poirier in the third round at UFC 269. However, “do Bronxs” would lose the belt on the scale ahead of a victory against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.

Oliveira has lost three of his last five bouts since then, twice coming up short in championship opportunities against Islam Makhachev and Topuria.
