Charles Oliveira’s father provided him with some valuable advice to help him return to training regardless of the outcome of his fights.
Oliveira recently recalled a conversation with his father after a tough win. While “do Bronxs” was ecstatic on a call with his father, his father reminded him that the victory would soon be a thing of the past. When Oliveira lost his next fight, his father shared the same words of advice, that the loss too would be a thing of the past. Oliveira’s father’s words helped him return to training soon after his last loss against Ilia Topuria.

Oliveira Able to Put Fights in Perspective
“It was a really difficult fight for me, I went and won,” Oliveira told Laerte Viana. “I was so euphoric, winning, so happy. And on the call with my dad I was in a rush. And my dad said, ‘That’s cool, nice, celebrate, you deserve it. But remember it’s only today because tomorrow your victory is already gone.’
“… I didn’t really understand that. And then something happened, I ended up losing. And my father said, ‘I already told you this once, I’m going to tell you again. It’s just for today, go home and train.’ So that was one of the things that made me go back to training after that last defeat to Topuria. Because it’s already in the past, it was just that one day. Today is a new day. I have to train and dedicate myself to be able to improve and be able to bounce back, regardless of the result.”
Oliveira defended his lightweight title twice before losing it to Islam Makhachev. The Brazilian has since gone 2-2, suffering a brutal knockout loss in a clash for the vacant title against Topuria at UFC 317 this past June. While Oliveira was scheduled to headline UFC Rio against Rafael Fiziev on Oct. 11, “Ataman” has been forced out with an injury. Oliveira is still looking for a replacement and has accused other lightweights of issuing hollow callouts without the intention to follow through.
