Aspinall put his heavyweight title on the line against Gane at UFC 321 this past October. The highly-anticipated matchup ended anticlimactically after Gane simultaneously poked Aspinall in both eyes in the first round. Despite taking four out of the five allotted minutes, Aspinall failed to recover, and the fight was declared a no contest.

Gane looked good on his feet against Aspinall for as long as the fight lasted. This led some fighters and fans to believe that Aspinall might have been looking for a way out of the fight. However, Blaydes (19-5) stands by Aspinall’s decision to stop fighting. “Razor” saw Gane’s fingers digging deep into Aspinall’s eye while retracting. Blaydes respects Aspinall’s decision after his vision was compromised to a point that made him vulnerable. Blaydes believes no fighter who steps inside the Octagon is scared to fight.
‘He’s Not a Bitch’
“It wasn’t the initial poke, but as Gane was bringing back his hand, it kind of dug in there pretty deep,” Blaydes told Home of Fight. “And you gotta respect Tom. He’s not a bitch, he’s not a hoe. He’s not scared. If he says he can’t continue because his eyes are at the point where he can’t see, he might be getting knocked out — I gotta respect it… I don’t understand all the anger. He’s not scared. Everyone in the UFC is a lion. Lions are not scared of other lions.”
Aspinall blew out his knee against Blaydes in their first matchup in 2022. Aspinall avenged that loss last year by knocking out Blaydes in 60 seconds to defend his interim heavyweight title. Blaydes has since rebounded with a split decision win over Rizvan Kuniev.
👀👊 Curtis Blaydes on Tom Aspinall eye poke:
“He’s not a b**ch, he’s not a h*e. He’s not scared.
If he says he can’t continue because his eyes are at the point where he can’t see, he might getting knocked out — I gotta respect it.”
