Social media was abuzz last week when it was revealed that negotiations had apparently broken down for a title fight between Kamaru Usman and former interim champ Colby Covington.
While the public aren’t privy to the negotiations between the parties involved, UFC President Dana White has revealed that the promotion offered Covington a title fight against Usman as well as a fight against former champ Tyron Woodley with “Chaos” rejecting both offers.
This is not the first time Covington has rejected a title fight offer as back in 2018, after Covington won the interim title, the UFC offered him a chance to fight then-champion Tyron Woodley, but he opted to undergo nasal surgery instead which apparently didn’t sit too well with White.
The middleweight title fight between Usman and Covington had been pencilled in for UFC 244 on Nov. 2, but has now been reserved for another headliner featuring Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal.
During the UFC 244 press conference, White addressed the rumors of the negotiation breakdown between Usman and Covington and claimed “Chaos” originally turned down an offer to fight Usman before rejecting a bout with Woodley (via ESPN).
“Colby Covington can say whatever he wants. We make fights for a living, that’s what we do. We go after guys and say, ‘This is next, this is the date, do you want the fight?’ And obviously, he wanted more money to fight Usman. We went back and forth. This is the second time he’s done it. He had a [title] fight in Dallas [last year], too. So, we said if you don’t want to fight Usman, then we’ll give you Tyron Woodley. He turned down Tyron Woodley, too. You either want to fight or you don’t. When Colby Covington wants to fight, he’ll let us know.”
