Tom Aspinall’s first heavyweight title defense against Ciryl Gane ended in a disappointing no contest at UFC 321 due to an eye poke. A double eye poke from Gane late in the first round left Aspinall unable to continue. Gane is receiving a lot of flak from fans due to the anticlimactic end to a much-awaited matchup.

However, Johnson defended Gane, claiming it is a natural human reaction to extend one’s hands when attacked. Johnson also noted that the way Gane’s hands were extended is actually the correct technique to throw kicks in Muay Thai. “Mighty Mouse” believes eye pokes will always be rampant in MMA unless boxing gloves are used.
It’s a Natural Reaction
“People are always talking about, ‘When are we gonna fix eye pokes in mixed martial arts?’ Newsflash: you’re never f—ing gonna do it,” Johnson said on YouTube. “Reason why is because as human beings our natural reaction when somebody comes towards us is, open my hands and stick my hands out… Obviously the foul was an accident, but the way he had his hands on Tom Aspinall’s face is the correct technique to do… So once again, you’re never gonna fix eye pokes in mixed martial arts unless you put us in actual boxing gloves.” While the UFC introduced a new design of gloves last year, it failed to stop eye pokes. The promotion has since returned to their older design.
