Aspinall put his heavyweight title on the line against Ciryl Gane in the main event at UFC 321 last weekend in Abu Dhabi. The fight unfortunately ended in a no contest after a double eye poke from Gane late in the first round left Aspinall unable to continue.

O’Malley wonders what Aspinall’s career trajectory would have been with a potential win over Gane. While he was the interim champ, Aspinall was chasing a title unifier against Jon Jones, who retired without fighting him. However, Jones returned to the drug testing pool within weeks and has been rallying for a spot at the UFC White House card in June 2026. “Suga” believes Aspinall could have potentially fought Jones at the White House with a win over Gane at UFC 321. O’Malley believes the heavyweight division would have become more exciting as a whole had Aspinall won.
‘There’s So Much Tom Missed Out On’
“What could’ve been if Tom Aspinall goes out there and wins,” O’Malley said on his YouTube channel. “What happens to his career after that? That’s a Jon Jones potential fight at the White House. There’s so much Tom missed out on because of that super unfortunate, sad [eye poke]… It would have made the heavyweight division so much more fun.”
Aspinall hadn’t fought in over a year before UFC 321, mostly awaiting a matchup against Jones. While Aspinall was a heavy favorite going into the fight, Gane was competitive in the abbreviated fight. UFC CEO Dana White has already indicated that an immediate rematch between the two will be next.
