Lewis recently revealed that he is in the best shape of his life mentally and physically. “The Black Beast” credits peptides that the UFC gave him for the change he has been feeling.

“I ain’t gonna lie to you, I’m in the best shape of my life right now,” Lewis said on “The Beast and the Cowboy” pocast. “Mentally, physically, everything’s going great right now. The UFC provided me with some great peptides, and I’ve been taking it every day, and I’ve been feeling the difference.”
It’s unclear if Lewis is trollling or is not aware of the substance he received from the promotion, because peptides are banned according to the UFC’s anti-doping policy. According to UFC senior vice president of athlete health and performance Jeff Novitzky, Lewis received third-party injectable compounds that are allowed at all times.

Like a Video Game
Lewis’s coach, Bob Perez, has also been impressed with the results from the compounds, though he also referred to them as peptides. Perez finds Lewis mentally focused and adapting to his instructions like a video game. Perez also says that the medication has starkly improved Lewis’s recovery.
“I was so proud of Derek today, dude. He was a freaking video game yesterday,” Perez said. “Mental clarity was on. So I’d make a call or an adjustment. He would do it immediately. His recovery was stupid… And I was really mind blown how quickly the peptides took effect. It’s gonna be a game changer for him.”
Lewis (29-12) is scheduled to fight Waldo Cortes-Acosta (16-2) at UFC 324 on Saturday in Las Vegas. Lewis is 3-2 in his last five outings and coming off back-to-back knockout wins. Meanwhile, Cortes-Acosta fought five times in 2025, going 4-1.
