On Aug. 27, 2011 at UFC 134, fight fans welcomed Erick Silva to the Octagon. All the pre-fight talk surrounding the then 27-year-old was about his prospects at becoming a future champion. The Brazilian came into the organization with a 12-1 (1 NC) record, as well as holding Jungle Fight welterweight title.
That night on his debut, Silva knocked out Luis Ramos in 40 seconds and had fight fans stand up and take notice. However, his Ultimate Fighting Championship career never really took off despite so much promise. Since his debut, he’s alternated between wins and losses and his record in his last five is 1-4.
Silva has squared off against some big names in his career: Jon Fitch, Matt Brown, Josh Koscheck, Dong Hyun Kim and Neil Magny; he was unsuccessful against all of them. All of his seven victories inside the Octagon are by finishes (including five submissions). There’s no doubt he’s an exciting fighter, however his overall UFC record stands at 7-8.
It was reported by MMA Fighting that his contract with the UFC has expired and he is free to negotiate with rival organizations.
Silva’s aggressive and exciting fighting style will ensure he gets picked up by another promotion, although the chances of him extending his contract with the UFC are slim given his recent form and how talent-stacked his weight class is.
