“I greet everyone who has gathered today in Istanbul. I greet everyone who cares about the lives of the residents in Palestine and the residents of the Gaza Strip,” he said during a virtual press conference. “Today I, Islam Makhachev, want to appeal to everyone, first of all not as an athlete, not as a champion, but as a simple person who cares about what this lawless people have been doing for two years. Seeing everything they do, it’s impossible to be silent… This is nothing more than genocide aimed at the destruction. Zionists are committing atrocities in front of the whole world. This is nothing more than terrorism.”

Makhachev Joins Other UFC Stars in Support of Palestine

Makhachev is not the only UFC star to have weighed in on the Palestine-Israel conflict. While former welterweight champ Belal Muhammad has long been supporting Palestine, current lightweight champ Ilia Topuria also recently voiced similar sentiments.

Makhachev is undefeated in 15 UFC outings since 2018. The Dagestani legend defended his lightweight title four times, the most in the history of the division, before moving up to welterweight earlier this year. Makhachev is now set to challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight title at UFC 322 on Nov. 22 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
