Marshall faced Erik Silva in a featherweight matchup on the prelims at UFC Mexico on Saturday at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico. Marshall justified his heavy favorite status by submitting Silva with a rear-naked choke in the very first round. Marshall revealed that while he originally planned to spend some more time on his feet, his opponent’s wild haymakers caught him off guad. When Marshall heard his corner calling for a double leg, he didn’t hesitate.

“I would have liked to stay on the feet a little bit more but he was throwing some wild stuff at me that I wasn’t really expecting,” Marshall said in a post-fight interview with the UFC. “So safe bet, heard coach from the corner saying, ‘Jab-double leg.’ Listened to what coach said, jab-double leg, and from there I know my grappling is very high level. So I was just able to secure the finish there.”

Marshall (9-3) was previously juggling between fighting and working as a fireman in Jersey City, New Jersey. “Fire” has now quit his job as a fireman and moved to Florida to train at American Top Team. After coming up on the short side of a highly controversial decision against Mairon Santos last year, this victory over Silva comes as a relief for Marshall.
“It’s really fulfilling to see that I changed my whole life around,” Marshall said. “I had a great job working as a fireman in Jersey City. I quit that job, I moved to Florida, pursued fighting full-time, made that my life and my career. So I put everything into this and to get results like this – truly there’s nothing better.”
Marshall is now 3-3 in the UFC after making his debut in 2022.
