While more than a few observers thought the UFC Vegas 111 headliner might have been halted prematurely, Gabriel Bonfim believes the stoppage was just.
The Brazilian earned his fourth consecutive promotional triumph on Saturday when he defeated Randy Brown via knockout at the 1:40 mark of the second stanza. “Marretinha” rocked his adversary with a knee in close quarters, and Brown appeared to be rendered unconscious before waking up as he bounced off the canvas. Though Brown appeared to be covering up when Bonfim went to land follow-up strikes, referee Mark Smith had seen enough to wave off the contest.
“He was asleep guys. He was knocked out,” Bonfim said at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “I saw his eyes were in the back of his head.”
Despite that controversy, Bonfim’s progress is the Las Vegas-based promotion is difficult to deny. The 28-year-old has won six of seven Octagon appearances overall and four in a row since suffering his lone defeat against Nicolas Dalby in November 2023.
“You guys can see the loss toDalby changed me completely,” Bonfim said. “I know what I had to do. I had to level up. You guys see what I’m doing right now. All you’ve got to expect from me in 2026 is [being] among the Top 5 before I become the champion of this weight class.”
Bonfim: I Want to Retire Covington
In the aftermath of his latest triumph, Bonfim issued a curious callout of Colby Covington, who hasn’t fought since last December. Despite his inactivity, “Chaos” is still somehow No. 10 in the UFC’s welterweight rankings. That, Bonfim explained, was the reasoning behind his callout.
“He’s the one that’s holding up the weight class,” Bonfim said. “He doesn’t want to fight. He’s ranked. He’s holding up the weight class and I need to be the one to retire him.”
