Islam Makhachev: Famous catchphrase not meant to be a joke

Islam Makhachev had no idea that his sincere advice for Daniel Cormier’s son would become an iconic one-liner.

Makhachev (28-1) once advised Cormier to send his son to Dagestan for ‘two to three years and forget’ to improve his wrestling. That phrase has since gained a cult following and has become fodder for MMA memes. However, Makhachev recently clarified that he never meant the statement to be a joke.

Makhachev recalls Cormier telling him that he wanted to improve his son’s wrestling. Makhachev told Cormier that he, as a parent, wouldn’t push his son very hard in America. Makhachev suggested that Cormier should send his son to Dagestan, where he would be well taken care of and receive intense training. Makhachev added that if “DC” really wanted his son to become elite, then he should send him for “two to three years and forget.” Makhachev is confident that after two to three years in Dagestan, Cormier’s son would at least be an American champion upon his return to the U.S.

Sincere Advice

“It’s not like I said a joke that time,” Makhachev told MMA fight Arena. “Daniel Cormier was talking about wrestling and he said, ‘I want my son to become high level wrestler.’ And I just told him, ‘Hey, you’re in the U.S. right now. And you’re not gonna push your son very hard. But we have a place, and everybody knows it’s your son, we’re gonna take care of him. Give him a good school, good coaches who can help him.’ In my mind I was like, ‘If you really want your son to become good wrestler then send him [to Dagestan] for two to three years.’ When he comes back he’s gonna be American champion at minimum.”

Although not for two to three years, Cormier later sent 11 kids from his wrestling academy with two parents to Dagestan and Moscow for a month. Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0) took care of the entire team from hotels to food and training. Cormier said that the team benefited significantly from the experience.
