Jack Della Maddalena doesn’t see much intrigue in Islam Makhachev’s striking.
Maddalena is scheduled to defend his welterweight title against Makhachev in the main event at UFC 322 on Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Maddalena believes Makhachev’s striking is easier to crack compared to that of Belal Muhammad, whom he dethroned to become champ. Maddalena views Makhachev as a more conventional striker with a traditional approach, in contrast to Muhammad’s dynamic style. The Australian is working on his anti-wrestling skills and is confident that he can defend his title against Makhachev.

“I think Islam Makhachev is a better version of Belal,” he said on The West Sport Show. “I think his striking on the feet is easier than Belal’s. Because he’s more, stays in one stance. He has a more traditional style. But yeah, he’s tough. He’s the pound-for-pound No. 1. So, it’s a tough fight. But guess we’ll just watch all his fights again, make a solid game plan, and then just start working at it. I’m gonna start working on ways to beat him, different ways to get back to my feet, stuffing the takedown. I’m pretty confident I can get this one done.”
Makhachev is a heavy -265 favorite against Maddalena, a +205 underdog. However, Maddalena is no stranger to upsetting the odds, shocking fans and pundits alike with his performance against “Remember the Name” at UFC 315 this past May. While Maddalena is riding an 18-fight winning streak, Makhachev is undefeated in 15 UFC outings which includes four lightweight title defenses, the most in the division’s history.
