Joseph Morales is not totally neutral about the upcoming title fight in his division.

Morales (14-2) continued his second UFC stint in the co-main event at UFC Vegas 111 against Matt Schnell on Saturday. The flyweight prospect submitted Schnell with a guillotine in less than three minutes.

Morales subsequently weighed in on the upcoming flyweight title fight between Alexandre Pantoja and Joshua Van, scheduled to go down at UFC 323 on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas. While “Bopo” lauded both fighters, he believes, or rather hopes, that the champion will defend his belt against Van (15-2). However, Morales’ prediction is likely biased, as he wants to be the one to dethrone Pantoja (30-5). Morales believes he stylistically matches up well with “The Cannibal,” considering his ground game and fight IQ.

Morales Wants to Take Out Pantoja

“I think Pantoja’s one of the greatest flyweights of all time,” Morales said at the post-fight media scrum. “I honestly would love for him to win because I feel I match up great with him. I feel like his striking is really good, but I just have the IQ and his jiu-jitsu is great, but so is mine. I feel I’d be able to match that. Joshua Van’s a tough dude. He hits hard. He’s got great striking, lot of volume, decent takedown defense… But I think Pantoja takes it. But I think that’s just me being biased. I want to be the one to take out Pantoja.”

Morales made his first UFC appearance as an undefeated prospect in 2017. However, he was released in 2019 following back-to-back losses.
