B.J. Penn is prohibited from having contact with his mother after a Hawaii judge granted Lorraine Shin a one-year, no-contact protection order against the ex-UFC champion.
The ruling is retroactive to May 26, when Shin initially sought the restraining order. Shin requested that the order be for two years, but Judge Jeffery Ng ultimately settled on one year on Tuesday in Hilo Family Court. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald was first to report the news.
As part of the protective order, Penn is prohibited from coming within 100 yards of his mother’s residence and place of employment. He is also prohibited from coming within 100 feet of Shin at any neutral location and must leave immediately if they happen to be in the same place. Penn is not allowed to contact Shin in any manner, including via telephone, written or electronic means of communication.
Penn Has Troubling History with Mother in Recent Months
Shin claimed that she has been subject to “extreme psychological abuse” from Penn, who has allegedly taken her personal belongings, stolen her mail, attempted to remove security cameras from her home and tried to prevent her from calling the police. Penn has been arrested multiple times in recent months for violating the terms of what had been a temporary restraining order.
Meanwhile, Penn previously had his own request for a restraining order denied by a judge. The UFC Hall of Famer has indicated on social media that he believes his family has been killed and replaced by imposters. Last month, Penn issued a plea for help to former UFC bosses Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White, claiming that he was “getting pushed out of everything.”
Shin has stated that she believes her son suffers from Capgras delusional syndrome, a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter. In her initial restraining order request, Shin asked that Penn receive medical help or therapy for his condition.
A former champion at both lightweight and welterweight, the 46-year-old Penn hasn’t fought since May 2019, when he lost a unanimous decision to Clay Guida at UFC 237. He exited the UFC on a seven-fight losing streak.
