Karate Combat President: Alex Pereira Will Fight in Pit After UFC Retirement

Karate Combat president Asim Zaidi believes Alex Pereira will compete in the pit after his UFC retirement.

Zaidi was recently asked to name the dream UFC fighter whom he wants to compete in Karate Combat. Zaidi said that he believes it’s only a matter of time before Pereira competes in his promotion. Zaidi believes “Poatan” will hang up his UFC gloves probably after he wins a belt in a third weight class. Zaidi then wants to give the Brazilian a final send-off with an outing inside the Karate Combat pit. While Zaidi doesn’t think anyone can beat Pereira, he believes Olympic bronze medallst Robelis Despaigne would be a good matchup for his favourite striker.

“I know it’ll happen when it’s done,” Zaidi told Home of Fight. “Alex Pereira’s always said that he needs to fight in the pit before his career’s over. And one day maybe when he gets triple champ in the UFC, we’ll get him here in the pit to say goodbye. And I think you’ll see something really cool from him. So that’s my dream match… Robelis vs. Alex Pereira would be crazy… Alex Pereira is my favorite striker ever. So no, I don’t think anybody can handle Alex Pereira.”

‘Poatan’ Has Connections to Karate Combat

Pereira’s sister, Aline Pereira, became the inaugural Karate Combat women’s flyweight champion with a unanimous decision win over Fan Peloumpi at the Mana Wynwood Center in Miami on Saturday. Aline is 3-0 in Karate Combat with two knockout victories.

Alex Pereira was also seen lightly sparring with Zaidi at his gym in Miami earlier this year. Zaidi has previously claimed that Pereira wishes to compete at least once in Karate Combat. Pereira won the UFC light heavyweight title and defended it three times within a year before losing the belt to Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313 this past March. While Ankalaev wanted to defend his title against Pereira in June, Pereira was reportedly not ready to fight then. The Brazilian is expected to get a chance to reclaim his title at a future event.
