Nelson had his opponent reeling toward the end of the opening stanza, and as he unleashed a barrage of ground-and-pound, referee Dan Miragliotta appeared to step in to stop the contest with approximately three seconds remaining. As it turned out, the veteran official wasn’t waving off the bout — he simply thought the round had ended. As a result, the fight eventually made it to the judges scorecards, with Nelson earning a unanimous decision triumph.
During the broadcast, UFC vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner confirmed that Miragliotta had made an error at the end of Round 1. As for Nelson, he had to make sure he could recover from the adrenaline dump that occurred as he pursued what appeared to be a fight-ending sequence.
“I thought I won the fight at the end of the first,” Nelson admitted in his post-fight interview. “I got up, I was walking over to shake my opponent’s hand and somebody’s yelling, ‘It’s not over, it’s not over.’ And I’m like, ‘I just blew all my gas there at the end. It’s not over now, what’s going on?’ The rest of the fight was just recovering from pouring all my energy at the end of the first.”
Nelson: ‘I Feel Great at 155’
Fortunately for Nelson, he had enough left in the tank to hold off Frevola over the final two frames. Perhaps some of that can be attributed to the Canadian’s decision to move up from featherweight to 155 pounds.
“Night and day difference. I don’t know if I was ever a 145er. It’s hard to say,” Nelson said. “Matt’s a strong durable guy…he’s not a small lightweight, and I feel like I held my own against him. I feel great at 155.”
“The Monster’ has won four of his last five Octagon appearances.
