Mairon Santos Explains Weight Miss at UFC 323

Mairon Santos miscalculated his weight cut for UFC 323

Santos was scheduled to fight Muhammadjon Naimov in a featherweight matchup at UFC 323 on Saturday. However, the fight took place at catchweight as Santos came in 1.5 pounds over the non-title featherweight limit of 146 pounds. “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 32 winner also forfeited 20% of his purse to Naimov for missing weight.

A ‘Miscalculation’

Santos (17-1) finished Naimov (13-4) in the third round to maintain his undefeated UFC record. “The Legend” subsequently opened up on his weight miss. Santos claims he cut 10 pounds within a couple of hours a day before the weigh-ins. With only a couple of pounds left to cut, the Brazilian was confident that it wouldn’t be an issue on the day of the weigh-ins. However, despite visibly sweating, Santos’ weight just wouldn’t go down. However, Santos has learned from his mistake and vows not to miss weight again.

“It was a miscalculation,” Santos said at the post-fight press conference. “The night before I lost about 10 pounds in a couple of hours. And I was like, ‘OK in the morning I’m just gonna lose the rest.’ I had maybe two and a half pounds [left]. I was visibly sweating but my weight wouldn’t come off. I tried until the limit of the time but my weight wouldn’t come off. So I know next time if I come just one pound lighter, I will make weight. So it won’t happen again.”
