Mason Jones details difference between first UFC stint, current winning streak

Mason Jones is a completely different fighter from his forgettable first UFC stint.

Jones (18-2) took on previously undefeated French prospect Alex Sola in a lightweight bout at UFC London on Saturday. While Sola dropped Jones early with a spinning-back elbow, the Welsh fighter showed impressive grit in recovering quickly. Jones came from behind and put on a slugfest to earn a unanimous decision win, handing Sola (11-1) his only career loss. The brutal war also earned the “Fight of the Night” honors.

Jones made his UFC debut in 2021 and went 1-2 with one no contest in the promotion, suffering his only career losses. “The Dragon” fought out his UFC contract in 2022 and decided not to renew it. Jones then racked up four consecutive wins in Cage Warriors to earn his second UFC opportunity. The 30-year-old has racked up three consecutive wins since starting his second UFC stint last year. Jones revealed that he never felt that he belonged in the UFC during his first tenure. Currently riding a seven-fight winning streak overall, Jones believes he has done enough to deserve a ranked opponent next.

Body After Body

“My first tenure – I never felt secure in my foundations,” Jones told the UFC. “I never felt I truly deserved to be here. And I could never really secure that win. This time I beat body after body. I beat a veteran in Jeremy Stephens, I beat Bolaji Oki, and then I’ve just beat Alex Sola. I’ve proved I deserve to be here… So, I think I’ve more than made up for my first run. And I think I proved that I deserve a number next to my name, a Top 15 shot.”
