Two of the best European prospects are going to clash at Cage
Warriors Fighting Championship as part of
“The Trilogy”, the trio of consecutive events the British
promotion has planned for its September return.
On Monday morning, Cage Warriors announced that current lightweight
champion Mason Jones
will face Adam
Proctor for the vacant welterweight championship at the
upcoming CW 116 event.
After several dominant performances, the unbeaten Jones (9-0) is
gaining a reputation for himself on the European regional scene.
Last time he stepped in the cage, “The Dragon” won the vacant
lightweight championship at the expense of Joe
McColgan via first-round TKO. Prior, Jones edged both
Donovan
Desmae and Aleksi
Mantykivi by unanimous decision at CW 104 and CW 108,
respectively. Now, he moves up a weight class in an attempt to add
another belt to his collection and become the third CW
two-divisional champion after Conor
McGregor and Dan Hardy.
“Adding the welterweight title to my lightweight belt is going to
cement my legacy as a Cage Warriors legend,” said Jones in a
statement. “Being the first Welsh fighter and only the second since
McGregor to win two titles is something that I have no doubt will
catapult me to the UFC, especially on a night which is set to make
history as one of the biggest ever for European MMA.”
Proctor (12-1) is currently riding a seven-bout winning
streak. He cemented his No. 1 contender status by dominating
all the competition he faced under the Cage Warriors banner so
far. “The Love Doctor” overcame Angelo
Rubino, Olli
Santalahti, and Madars
Bertholds-Fleminas via unanimous decision at CW 98, CW 107, and
CW 112, respectively.
CW 116 will go down at the Manchester BEC Arena on Sept. 26. A
few days ago, the organization also announced that Morgan
Charriere would take on ex-Professional Fighters League
tournament member Max Coga in a
featherweight title affair on the same night.
