Mauricio Ruffy Believes He is Bad Matchup for Topuria: ‘If I Touch Him, He’ll Go Down’

This year has not been the best for two longtime world MMA powerhouses, the United States and Brazil.

The week after Jon Jones retired, which left the U.S. without a men’s title in the world’s largest promotion, Brazilian fans saw their most popular figure, Charles Oliveira, knocked out by Ilia Topuria in the UFC 317 main event. That moves Brazilian fighters to 0-9 in main events thus far in 2025. On the same night, another Brazilian lightweight hopeful, Renato Carneiro, lost to Beneil Dariush.

It wasn’t all bad news for Brazilians, who also watched Alexandre Pantoja submit Kai Kara-France for his fourth successful title defense in the UFC 317 co-headliner. Pantoja is the owner of Brazil’s only UFC title at the moment.

In attendance at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Mauricio Ruffy used his social media account to send a message to the newly-crowned lightweight king.

“Make the most of this moment Topuria,” Ruffy wrote. “I’m definitely going to put you to sleep!! #oneshot.”

In an exclusive interview with Sherdog.com, Ruffy explained how he could surprise Topuria.

“Styles make fights. Topuria plays this technical game,” Ruffy said. “Charles has a lot of difficulty playing this technical game. Which is exactly the song I know how to sing. I would know how to use my range advantage against him. In my last three fights, I haven’t taken a single hard punch.

Ruffy Extremely Confident in Physical Tools

“I’m sure Topuria would have a lot of difficulty against me because due to my reach, he would have to expose himself a lot. He has already shown that he doesn’t have a strong chin. We’ve seen him almost lose some fights by KO. I’m sure that if I touch him, he’ll go down.”

The Fighting Nerds representative is well aware that he will likely need a couple more victories to have the chance to back up his claim.

“One step at a time,” he said. “I know that the UFC wants me to do a couple more fights, but the UFC itself said that an athlete’s performance speaks louder than the number in the rankings. It’s no coincidence that before Bobby Green, they offered me Justin Gaethje, a Top 5 fighter, even though I’m not in the rankings. So let’s go — one step at a time.”
