Mauricio Ruffy Reveals Potential Opponent Is One of Most Loved Fighters

Mauricio Ruffy’s next fight could be against one of his favorite fighters.

Ruffy recently revealed that he is likely to face fellow countryman Renato “Moicano” Carneiro next. While Ruffy doesn’t mind facing fellow Brazilians, he would preferably avoid it given the plethora of options in the UFC. However, Ruffy is currently facing a lack of options, with most ranked lightweights either already booked or sidelined with injuries. Ruffy’s manager claims the UFC is interested in a matchup against Carneiro, and he believes it makes sense. While Ruffy likes Carneiro, they are not best friends, and he agrees with his manager about the matchup.

‘I Think It Makes Sense’

“I don’t like fighting against Brazilians,” Ruffy recently said on the the YouTube channel Cornerman. “It’s not that I don’t like it. It’s that I think there are so many paths to take in the UFC, you don’t need to face a Brazilian. And in my case, it’s against one of the guys I love the most in this sport. My manager wants to make this fight because he thinks it makes sense right now. Everyone else already has a fight scheduled, others are injured… The UFC wants to give me a ranked opponent. Now, according to what my manager and the UFC told me, the fight they want is Mauricio Ruffy vs. Moicano… We’re not close friends. He’s someone I like, but the UFC wants to make this fight, and I think it makes sense.”

Ruffy (12-2) is coming off his lone UFC loss against Benoit St.Denis at UFC Paris this past September, which snapped a seven-fight winning streak, including three UFC wins. Meanwhile, “Moicano” (20-7) is coming off consecutive losses against elite competition in Islam Makhachev and Beneil Dariush
