Omari Akhmedov vs. Tom Breese announced for Jan. 16 UFC event

Omari Akhmedov and Tom Breese are set to face off in the new year.

The UFC announced Monday that Akhmedov (20-5-1) and Breese (12-2) will fight in a middleweight bout on Jan. 16. A location for the Fight Night event is still to be announced.

Akhmedov recently saw a six-fight unbeaten streak end when he fought former UFC champion Chris Weidman in August. Weidman won a unanimous decision, dropping Akhmedov’s record in his last seven fights to 5-1-1. Prior to that, Akhmedov held notable victories over Ian Heinisch and Tim Boetsch, and he battled Marvin Vettori to a majority draw at UFC 219.

Competing for just the fifth time since 2016, Breese has alternated wins and losses in his past five fights. In his most recent outing in October, he defeated UFC newcomer KB Bhullar by first-round TKO.

The Jan. 16 UFC Fight Night event is expected to be headlined by a featherweight bout between former UFC champion Max Holloway and top contender Calvin Kattar.
