A light heavyweight rematch between Phil Davis and Lyoto Machida is currently in the works for the Bellator MMA card scheduled on Sept. 11.
The matchup was confirmed to MMA Fighting by sources close to the fight with verbal agreements in place. Combate initially reported the fight.
Davis and Machida first met when they were both on the UFC roster back in 2013. On that night, Davis got the job done with a unanimous decision over Machida.
Now, the former Penn State wrestler will look to build on a two-fight win streak after earning TKO’s against both Liam McGeary and Karl Albrektsson. Overall, Davis has gone 4-1 in his past five fights with his only loss coming to top-ranked light heavyweight contender Vadim Nemkov in 2018.
As for Machida, he will seek to return to the win column after suffering his first loss in Bellator after falling to former middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi. Prior to that setback, Machida had rattled off four straight wins including an impressive TKO against Chael Sonnen.
At this time, there’s been no announcement from Bellator regarding the card, but it’s expected that the Viacom-owned promotion will be setting up shop at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. for several consecutive shows held without audiences in attendance.
