Rafa Garcia will defend his lightweight crown against Humberto Bandenay in the evening’s main event when Combate Americas travels to Mexicali, Mexico, on Feb. 21.
The promotion announced the matchup on Monday. The card takes place at Auditorio del Estado and airs in English on AXS TV at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. A Spanish version of the broadcast will air on Univision (12 p.m. ET/PT) and on TUDN USA (12 a.m. ET/9 p.m. PT).
“This is arguably the single biggest fight in Combate Americas history between two young, rival superstars in what has become one of our strongest and most competitive weight divisions,” said Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren. “Rafa is a homegrown talent that we have proudly built from upstart to world champion and Humberto is coming off a spectacular victory of the most prestigious, one-night tournament in sports. It is going to be an electric night.”
Garcia claimed the lightweight crown with a five-round unanimous decision against Erick Gonzalez on Sept. 20. The 25-year-old Mexican fighter is unbeaten as a professional, a mark that includes seven appearances under the Combate Americas banner.
Bandenay, meanwhile, earned a title shot by defeating Hugo Prada, Jose Luis Verdugo and Gonzalez to win the promotion’s “Copa Combate” lightweight tournament on Dec. 20. The 25-year-old Lima, Peru, native owns an 18-7 professional mark that includes a 1-3 stint in the UFC from 2017 to 2019.
