According to Reuters, Joshua “sustained minor injuries” when the SUV he was riding in collided with another car in Nigeria’s Ogun State. Joshua was reportedly in the backseat of the vehicle when the accident occurred. The two people killed in the crash are believed to be Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer.

Per a statement from Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps, the car carrying Joshua was likely speeding when it lost control and crashed into a stationary vehicle parked on the roadside.
“The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the NFRSC wrote on X.
Video circulating on social media shows Joshua being helped from the vehicle after the accident. According to a report from BBC, the boxer was inside the car for nearly 10 minutes following the crash before regaining consciousness and exiting the vehicle. Joshua, who is the son of British-Nigerian parents, was reportedly in the country for the holidays following his sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul on Dec. 19 in Miami.
Paul Reacts to Accident
Paul has since reacted to the accident on social media.
“Life is much more important than boxing,” Paul wrote on X. “I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”
