Though a return date is not yet known, Tom Aspinall is making progress on his road to recovery.
The UFC heavyweight champion has been sidelined since his first title defense against Ciryl Gane ended prematurely when Aspinall was poked in both eyes by his opponent at the 4:35 mark of Round 1 in their Oct. 25 bout. In an update on his YouTube channel, the 32-year-old Brit revealed that he will be undergoing surgeries on both eyes.

“By the time this is going out I’ll probably have surgery on one eye already,” Aspinall said. “Next surgery is coming mid-January. So, we’re working towards getting back and that’s the plan.”
Aspinall has dealt with vision issues since UFC 321 and earlier this year shared that he was diagnosed with traumatic bilateral Brown’s syndrome, a condition which makes it difficult for an individual to move their eye freely in all directions.
Aspinall and Gane are expected to rematch when the champion is fully recovered, but a timetable for that bout has not been established. Aspinall has been victorious in nine of his 11 Octagon appearances, finishing all of his victories inside the distance. His lone defeat came when he suffered a knee injury in the opening stanza against Curtis Blaydes at UFC London in July 2022. He avenged that loss with a first-round knockout of Blaydes in an interim heavyweight title defense at UFC 304.
