A welterweight clash pitting Robbie Lawler against Santiago Ponzinibbio is in the works for UFC 245.
MMAjunkie.com was first to report the matchup, although bout agreements have not yet been signed. UFC 245 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 14 and includes a women’s bantamweight championship showdown between Amanda Nunes and Germaine de Randamie.
Lawler has fallen on hard times of late, losing four of his last five Octagon appearances. Most recently, the former welterweight champion dropped a lopsided five-round verdict to Colby Covington in the UFC on ESPN 5 headliner on Aug. 3. Lawler’s lone win since dropping 170-pound gold to Tyron Woodley came via unanimous decision over Donald Cerrone at UFC 214.
Argentina’s Ponzinibbio enters the matchup with Lawler on a seven-fight winning streak. The 32-year-old known as “Gente Boa” last competed at UFC Fight Night 140, where he scored a fourth-round knockout of Neil Magny in the evening’s headliner in November 2018.
