Gaethje and Pimblett fought for the interim lightweight title in the main event at UFC 324 on Saturday in Las Vegas. While Pimblett was a favorite going into the fight, Gaethje showed why he has been a perennial lightweight contender. Gaethje pressured Pimblett from the onset, unleashing haymakers to end the fight early. However, Pimblett showed immense heart in surviving Gaethje’s onslaught, even bouncing back to win the third round after getting dropped in the second. Despite Pimblett’s best efforts to go toe-to-toe, Gaethje inflicted more damage to earn a unanimous decision win after five rounds.

Despite Pimblett’s loss, Whittaker was impressed by the Liverpudlian’s show of grit. Whittaker believes Pimblett will walk through most of the division after recovering from the loss. Many including Whittaker are concerned about the lasting impact of such a damaging bout on a fighter. However, Whittaker believes “The Baddy” is still young enough to completely recover from the loss.
Heart and Grit
“Paddy’s heart, the grit of this kid — I don’t care that he lost the fight, he comes back and murders most guys,” Whittaker said on the “MMA Arcade” podcast. “Myself and everybody else is worried about how much a fight like this takes out of you, but Paddy’s super young. I think he’s young enough to bounce back from a fight like this and turn it into a superpower moving forward. Because not many people survive Gaethje the way he did. Or have moments of greatness late in the fight after taking the hits that he took.”
While Gaethje (27-5) looked nearly unscathed, Pimblett (23-4) had his moments in the fight. Gaethje praised Pimblett for backing up his claim that Scousers don’t get knocked out. Pimblett was rushed to the hospital immediately after the fight.
