Justin Gaethje’s performance at UFC 324 could lure Dustin Poirier out of retirement.
Gaethje faced Paddy Pimblett for the interim lightweight title in the main event at UFC 324 on Saturday in Las Vegas. Gaethje put a brutal beating on Pimblett to earn an upset win via unanimous decision.
Gaethje and Poirier have been two of the biggest superstars in the UFC’s lightweight division. While they never won a title, Gaethje and Poirier never lost relevance in the title picture throughout their careers. Poirier defeated Gaethje via technical knockout in their first clash in 2018. Gaethje exacted revenge in their rematch by knocking out Poirier with a brutal head kick in 2023. Poirier retired from the sport following a loss to Max Holloway last year. However, former UFC lightweight Josh Thomson urged Poirier to return for a trilogy fight against Gaethje.
Don’t Call It a Comeback
“I wanna see [Poirer] come back for this fight to finish it up,” Thomson wrote in response to a social media post comparing the two fighters.
Poirier also expressed interest in ending his retirement to settle the trilogy with Gaethje. Poirier wrote: “I’ll come back for that one”
