Rousimar Palhares will headline Saturday’s Kasai Pro 3 in New York against Craig Jones, and the grappling match is still on despite the fact that “Toquinho” came in at 218 pounds.
Palhares vs. Jones was originally slated to be a 185-pound no-gi bout, but the promotion changed the weight limit to 200 pounds a couple of days ago after Palhares informed he would be able to make that limit. Kasai eventually removed the weight limit before Palhares stepped on the scale at 218 pounds. Jones came in 13.4 pounds lighter than the Brazilian black belt.
A week before the weigh-ins, “Toquinho” told MMA Fighting he thought there was no weight limit for the bout. At that time, Palhares said he weighed 212 pounds and would move up to middleweight for his next MMA fight.
Kasai officials told MMA Fighting that a communication problem with Palhares’ team led to the confusion, and Jones agreed to the match being at openweight.
The leg lock specialists will collide in a 10-minute, submission-only match. If the time runs out and no one gets the finish, they will battle in a five-minute overtime with points to determine the winner.

Palhares wasn’t the only black belt to miss weight, though. UFC lightweight Gilbert Burns will face A.J. Agazarm in a 15-minute, submission-only 170-pound grappling match, but “Durinho” stepped on the scale at 180.4 pounds. With his suit on, Agazarm weighed 172.6 pounds.
”Unfortunately, my opponent decided not to be professional and make weight, but I’m still gonna bring it,” Agazarm said after the weigh-ins.
Kasai 3 will be streamed live online and also feature an eight-man 170-pound tournament with Vagner Rocha, Marcin Held, Masahiro Iwasaki, Victor Silverio, Jason Rau, Renato Canuto, PJ Barch and Matheus Lutes.
