Sportsbooks Offer Refunds for Suspicious Fight at UFC Vegas 110

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s return to its Apex on Saturday did not go down without some serious controversy.

A featherweight matchup between Isaac Dulgarian and Yadier Del Valle on the main card of UFC Vegas 110 has raised numerous eyebrows. Dulgarian opened as a -250 favorite against the undefeated Cuban. However, the odds dropped significantly for Dulgarian a couple of hours before the fight, with money was pouring in disproportionately Del Valle. Some books like DraftKings pulled the prop bets for the match on fight day and just left the actively tilting moneyline.

Still the betting favorite by a much smaller margin, the roughly -140 Dulgarian started off his performance by shooting for a quick takedown. It did not take more than a round for Del Valle to take his back and choke him out, with the stoppage coming at the 3:41 mark. Unconfirmed rumors around the MMA community are swirling that multiple large bets were placed on Del Valle to win in the opening round, prompting a flag on the pairing. According to Uncrowned, Dulgarian has already received his release papers from the promotion.

The pairing is currently under investigation from some sportsbooks like DraftKings, with this major stateside book not taking action until it makes a determination. Users have asked if the book plans on voiding bets for the bout.
“We are aware of the situation regarding the ‘Isaac Dulgarian vs. Yadier Del Valle’ event and we will be sure to let you know if our team has further updates,” DraftKings Support wrote on Sunday morning.

Some casino and gambling sites have already flipped the switch on the results of the fight, suggesting that the results may not be legitimate. Caesars Entertainment, who owns Caesars Sportsbook and William Hill’s stateside properties, has offered customers that bet on Dulgarian refunds. This includes both a credit for those that just picked Dulgarian outright, and a modified payout of parlays involving Dulgarian that did not hit solely because of his loss.

This is not the first betting scandal to rock the MMA landscape. Previously, Dulgarian’s coach and training partner, James Krause, allegedly operated an illegal betting Discord channel where he would sell his bet selections to buyers. In this process, he or one of his agents would allegedly take control of the accounts of those buying in to place the identical bets his team has suggested. This included a myriad of bets on MMA matches.

That situation came to a head when Glory MMA & Fitness—the team that Krause used to run—athlete Darrick Minner came into his bout with Nuerdanbieke Shayilan with an injury and his betting line shifted dramatically on fight day. It was suggested that because of his injury, those aware of it potentially including Minner’s friends and training partners put money on Shayilan to win inside the distance. Minner ended up losing in a little over a minute due to his pre-fight injury, and he and his team were thrown out of the promotion for this. The overarching investigation involving the FBI and IC360—formerly known as U.S. Integrity—is still underway.

Additionally, former UFC lightweight South Korea Tae Hyun Bang was imprisoned for his involvement in attempting to fix his match with Leo Kuntz in 2015. At UFC Fight Night 79, undercard participant Bang negotiated with individuals involved in organized crime where he would get paid a significant chunk of change—likely more than his fight purse—for losing to Kuntz. The prospective bettors would put down money for Kuntz, which ultimate flipped him from an underdog to a favorite.

Bang decided against throwing the fight at the last minute, and he went on to win a split decision and burn those betting on him expecting he would lose. The South Korean, along with three co-conspirators, were convicted for attempted fight fixing and imprisoned for nearly a year in 2017. Due to the length of the investigation, Bang got another fight in 2016—a decision loss to Nick Hein—before he was sent to prison and released from the roster.
