Elekana (9-2) welcomed Kevin Christian (9-3) to the Ultimate Fighting Championship in a light heavyweight contest at UFC Fight Night 263 on Saturday. The California native dropped Christian with a right hand and locked in a rear-naked choke that earned a litany of taps. However, referee Chris Tognoni was not in the correct position to see the multiple tapouts. Tognoni stopped the fight after Christian went limp, with the losing athlete’s face visibly swelling up from damage sustained earlier.
While fans initially suggested Elekana may have not felt the tap, the Californian revealed that he did. However, the 30-year-old did not want to run the risk of letting go too soon with the fight still proceeding. During the post-fight media scrum, Elekana had a couple words on the stoppage, one he felt he had every right squeezing to a technical submission.
“I felt him tapping,” Elekana openly admitted. “But I don’t wanna let go, and then he scrambles out somehow.”
Since dropping his promotional debut to Bogdan Guskov in January, Elekana has won two in a row. In this current run, he handed Ibo Aslan his first loss on the scorecards, and his tech sub of Christian is the first time the towering Brazilian had been rendered unconscious in a pro fight.
