While Steve Garcia will make his first Ultimate Fighting Championship headlining appearance on Saturday, he can’t help but admit he was hoping for a more high-profile booking.
“Mean Machine” will lock horns with David Onama in the UFC Vegas 110 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Garcia is in the midst of a six-bout promotional winning streak that includes five wins via KO or TKO. The Jackson-Wink MMA product is coming off a three-round verdict over featherweight staple Calvin Kattar on July 12.

Onama has plenty of momentum of his own with a four-fight winning streak and victories in six of his last seven Octagon appearances overall. However, in terms of name recognition, he’s probably a step down from Kattar.
“The way everything kind of went down, I was kind of hoping for something a little bit further ahead [in the rankings],” Garcia said during media day (video via MMAjunkie.com). “It’s not a hit on him [Onama]. It’s just, you want to advance your career. It’s about you. That’s how the sport operates.”
Date of Next UFC Featherweight Title Fight Remains Unknown
For Garcia to truly make headway at 145 pounds, there needs to be movement at the top of the division. After claiming featherweight gold for a second time with a unanimous decision win over Diego Lopes at UFC 314 this past April, Alexander Volkanovski has been on the sidelines awaiting his next challenger. Those with claims to the top contender spot include the likes of Lerone Murphy, Movsar Evloev and perhaps, Lopes once again.
Garcia doesn’t care who gets the next shot as long as there’s some type of movement in the weight class.
“But also, Volk’s too busy cooking. He’s holding everybody up at the top,” Garcia said. “He just needs to make a decision. Just pick somebody. I don’t know, just pull it out of a hat. Somebody, right? Because they’re all waiting. Get the division going again. At the top, I feel like we can still fight. So that’s what we’re doing.”
