UFC opens Performance Institute in Shanghai

The UFC Apex facility isn’t the only major piece of real estate that the company recently debuted.

This week also saw the opening of a brand new UFC building in China, officially titled the UFC Performance Institute Shanghai. Per a press release, it is being touted as “the world’s largest, state-of-the-art MMA training and development facility.” It is a 93,000 square-foot facility that is expected to serve the same purpose for the fighters as the original Las Vegas iteration of the PI.

PI Shanghai will act as the UFC’s headquarters in Asia, with UFC employees assisting athletes with fitness, nutrition, and physical therapy.

Officials already put the new PI to use with a two-day UFC Academy Combine at the start of the week, which saw officials bring in approximately 50 athletes to gauge whether they have an aptitude for a future career in MMA. Categories that were considered included grappling, striking, wrestling, cognitive evaluation, strength, and combat agility, among others.

UFC strawweight stars Jessica Andrade and Weili Zhang were also on-site in Shanghai for the opening ahead of their Aug. 31 bout in Shenzhen, China. Andrade will be seeking the first defense of her UFC title when she meets Zhang in the main event.
