Tatsuro Taira scored a second-round submission win over the previously undefeated Hyun Sung Park in the main event at UFC Vegas 108, also known as UFC on ESPN 71. However, a pair of bangers on the main card made an otherwise nondescript show into one fans will remember for a while. In a rare turn of events, the UFC awarded two “Fight of the Night” bonuses, deviating from the usual tradition of one FOTN and two “Performance of the Night” bonuses. Despite five finishes throughout the evening, no POTN awards were issued, but for good reason.
Kevin Vallejos initially proclaimed his main-card opener win over Danny Silva the best fight that night. However, the main card had plenty more to give. Esteban Ribovics (15-2) and Elves Brener (16-6) walked away with an extra $50K each for their lightweight slugfest. This marked Ribovics’ third straight FOTN after a split decision win over Daniel Zellhuber, followed by a split decision loss against Nasrat Haqparast.
The other FOTN went to another brilliant lightweight brawl between American Top Team colleagues Chris Duncan (14-2) and Mateusz Rebecki (20-3). While Duncan damaged Rebecki’s eye early on, the Polish fighter showed immense heart in going the distance, even splitting his opponent open in the last round. While Duncan walked away with a unanimous decision win, Rebecki earned his second consecutive FOTN bonus, the previous one from an upset win over Myktybek Orolbai last year.
