Video: ‘Last Week Tonight’ host John Oliver covers UFC’s ‘insane’ plan to launch ‘Fight Island,’ Dana White responds

Multi-time Emmy winner John Oliver may not be a massive UFC fan, but he might get a call from their marketing department following the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight.”

The HBO series addressed the return of sports in their main segment on Sunday night, which included the UFC’s trio of shows from Jacksonville, Fla. as well as UFC President Dana White’s plans to launch “Fight Island” sometime later this year.

White has confirmed plans for the promotion to hold events on a private island where international fighters would be allowed to compete since traveling into the United States isn’t an option right now due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While discussing how numerous sports are planning to comeback sooner rather than later, Oliver turned his attention to the UFC and he was particularly fascinated with “Fight Island.”

“While they couldn’t fly in international fighters for that event, their president Dana White has devised an insane workaround,” Oliver said when discussion “Fight Island” on the show.

“Yes, the UFC is apparently building a facility on a private island that they’re calling ‘Fight Island.’ Now, is that a clever name? No. Is it the perfect name? Yes! Because it’s the first thought an idiot would have if they wanted to name a private island where fights happen.”

Of course, Oliver had his own ideas for names for “Fight Island” including “Brawlhamas” as well as “Owie Maui” but the one at the top of the list was “UF-Sea.”

“Look at me, Dana, why didn’t you just call it ‘UF-Sea?” Oliver said. “It’s perfect.”

Check out the entire segment from “Last Week Tonight” as Oliver also mentions the WWE’s current platform as well as plans for future sporting events to return in the United States.

On Monday, White addressed the “Last Week Tonight” piece and took issue with its characterization of the promotion’s trio of events, saying it was “a perfect example of how you can control the narrative by using selective facts.”
