Neil Magny’s victory over Jake Matthews at UFC Perth on Sept. 27 will stand.

The welterweight bout featured some controversy when referee Jim Perdios appeared to wave off the fight in the first round after Matthews had Magny ensnared in a mounted guillotine choke. However, Perdios ultimately allowed the contest to continue after Magny protested the stoppage, which occurred in the waning seconds of the opening frame.

Eventually, Magny rallied and went on to submit Matthews with a brabo choke at the 3:08 mark of Round 3. Matthews later admitted that it was difficult to “switch back on” after thinking victory was in hand, and his team decided to appeal the defeat. While UFC excecutive Dave Shaw admitted at the post-fight press conference that a “mistake” was made by the official, the Combat Sports Commission has elected to uphold the decision and deny Matthews’ appeal.

Only Mathematical Error Can Overturn Ref’s Decision

“The decision made by the referee to award Neil Magny the win stands as final,” read a statement from the Combat Sports Commission (via MMAFighting.com). “In accordance with Unified Rules of MMA, a review of the decision can occur under the procedure of the regulatory authority –– in this case, the Combat Sport Commission of Western Australia (CSC).

“Under the CSC MMA Contest Rules 2019 a referee’s decision is final unless a mathematical error is identified in the scorecard. As no mathematical error is present in this case, the decision is in line with the contest rules.”

Matthews, a 23-fight UFC veteran, had a three-bout winning streak snapped by the controversial defeat. Magny, meanwhile, has rebounded from a two-fight skid to secure back[-to-back finishes of Matthews and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos.
