California commission to run special July 25 combat sports fundraising event

At this unusual gala at the end of July, those in attendance will be treated to luxurious food, fine wine and pristine face-punching.

Per a release from the California State Athletic Commission in conjunction with partnering company Raymond Vineyards, the commission will be operating a unique event called Napa Knockout on July 25. The show will take place at the aforementioned Raymond Vineyards in Napa Valley, and all proceeds will go to the commission’s Fighter Pension Fund for retired athletes.

Tickets will sell at $500 apiece for general admission, while fans can sit ringside for $1,000. Per the organization’s Instagram page, two muay thai, four boxing and four MMA matches will be contested at this venue, which is slated to be the first set of fights in California on the floor of a vineyard. The main event has not yet been determined, while the press release has provided a number of names who will be appearing in some capacity.

To further push for this being a VIP experience, the commission has roped in a number of athletes and figures from the sport to attend. Strikeforce and Strike MMA founder Scott Coker will be in the building, along with referee “Big” John McCarthy. As far as fighters go, those confirmed to appear include Ronda Rousey, Nate Diaz, Gina Carano, Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson, Chris Leben and Max Griffin. Boxing champs Vergil Ortiz and Arnold Barboza Jr. will also be at this show as well.

CSAC Executive Officer Andy Foster spoke highly about this new undertaking, saying, “Napa Knockout is about bringing people together for an incredible night while giving back to the combat sports community in a meaningful way. We truly believe this will be a historic evening.”

Napa Knockout partial lineup:

Matt Baker vs. Tony Charles – kickboxing
Antonio Vasquez vs. Tre Orlando – lightweight MMA
Philip “Scooby” Wright vs. Eddy Herrera – light heavyweight amateur MMA
Marley McNealy vs. TBA – boxing exhibition
