Conor McGregor Admits Effort of Rising to Superstardom ‘Almost Broke’ Him

Conor McGregor recently opened up on the cost at which his superstardom came.

McGregor is arguably the biggest superstar in the history of MMA. “Notorious” capitalized on his fame to build a brand out of himself, which gave birth to multiple businesses and millionaire status. However, the massive success didn’t come without a cost.

While McGregor was undoubtedly one of the best fighters in the world at his peak, he was a bigger star than fighters who were arguably better than him. The reason behind McGregor’s stardom was the way he promoted himself. One of the best trash talkers in the history of the sport, McGregor’s presence was felt in every press conference, weigh-in in and even as he entered the Octagon with the “billy” walk.

McGregor revealed that fighting and promoting are individually easy jobs; combining both is taxing. “Notorious” cited fighters who aren’t really big draws and just have to focus on the fight instead of having to worry about press conferences and outside chatter. The former UFC double champ admitted that having to promote himself nearly broke him as his stardom soared. The Dubliner urged fans to support those fighters who can fight and promote themselves at the highest level.

McGregor: Fighting on Its Own is Easy

“To fight as well as promote is the real deal,” McGregor said at a BKFC press conference. “To promote on its own is easy and also, coincidentally, to fight on its own is easy… You get these fighters, they come up, no one cares about you. Ducking under the radar, no one asks you questions. You get to show up and have fun and do your thing, and there’s no stress of the outside world, and it’s perfect.

“Then, when you rise, you’ve got to add this promotional element to it. And both of them combined is incredibly draining. And I wouldn’t be the first to tell you, it almost broke me. And maybe it did break me as I went on and achieved massive success and otherworldly superstardom. It overcame me at times. So to promote and fight at a high level deserves support and respect.”
